Bird monitoring reveals 41 species at Wildflower Co. farm, highlighting the value of biodiversity-friendly landscapes

Wildflower Co. has welcomed the results of a recent acoustic monitoring programme which recorded 41 bird species at its Hampshire production farm, including five Red List species and ten recognised Farmland Bird Indicator species.

The monitoring was carried out as part of the Chalkland Revival project, a landscape-scale initiative led by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust that is working with farm clusters across the North Wessex Downs to support wildlife recovery and habitat restoration.

The findings provide valuable evidence of the role that diverse, well-managed habitats can play in supporting biodiversity.

Among the species detected were Yellowhammer, Linnet, Lapwing, Reed Bunting, Barn Owl and Red Kite – all species associated with healthy farmland ecosystems.

The monitoring took place between September 2025 and March 2026 using acoustic recording technology. Automated devices captured bird calls at dawn and dusk, providing detailed insights into how wildlife uses the landscape over time.

Nationally, farmland birds have experienced significant declines, with Farmland Bird Indicator populations falling by more than 60% since 1970. Many species rely on a mix of habitats including wildflower-rich grasslands, hedgerows, rough grassland and seed-rich margins.

The results recorded at Wildflower Co.'s farm demonstrate how habitat diversity can help support wildlife across working landscapes.

James Hewetson-Brown, Managing Director and Founder or Wildflower Co., said: "These results are incredibly encouraging and demonstrate the importance of creating and maintaining diverse habitats within farmed landscapes.

"Birds are one of the clearest indicators of environmental health. To see species such as Yellowhammer, Linnet and Lapwing recorded on our site is a positive reflection of the habitats we are helping to create and manage.

"Projects like Chalkland Revival provide valuable evidence that conservation, farming and biodiversity enhancement can work hand in hand."

Wildflower Co. specialises in science-led wildflower habitat creation, helping developers, landscapers, ecologists and local authorities deliver long-term biodiversity outcomes.

The company believes monitoring and evidence gathering will play an increasingly important role as Biodiversity Net Gain requirements and wider environmental targets continue to drive demand for measurable ecological improvements.

The findings also reinforce the importance of wildflower habitats, which support insects, provide seed sources, create shelter, and contribute to healthy food chains that benefit birds and other wildlife
